Voting Member of the Amnesty Board

  • Are you looking to contribute to a governance board and stand up for the rights of others?
  • Are you strategic, communicative and an encouraging team member?
  • Do you have a career worth of skills that Amnesty International would benefit from?

Amnesty International is a global movement for human rights.  When injustice happens to one person, it matters to us all.  We bring torturers to justice, change oppressive laws and free people around the world jailed for voicing their opinions.

The Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand Board is looking for two new members to help meet the strategic direction of the organisation and the wider movement.  Together with your volunteer colleagues, you will monitor and vote on strategic decisions and operational reports.

Would you bring one or more of the following attributes to Amnesty?  We’re looking for people who will bring these attributes to our existing team:

  • Understanding of and dedication to human rights in Aotearoa New Zealand and globally
  • Understanding and experience in governance
  • Dedication to Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Experience of and connections in Te Ao Maori

If even a couple of these speak to you, you could be the ideal person for the job.

Do you have the capacity to fully participate as a Board member?  This involves attending at least four meetings a year, including three one day meetings, a two-day strategy meeting and the annual meeting held in May.

It also involves participating in online discussions, Zoom (Skype) calls and emails between meetings, as well as being available to participate in sub-committees as needed.

In the spirit of Amnesty International’s volunteering ethos, this is an unpaid role.  But we don’t want the cost of participating to be a barrier to anyone and will cover the expenses of participating.  This could include reimbursements for travel, childcare, accommodation, food and all other reasonable expenses.

Amnesty International is a human rights organisation and an equal opportunity employer, and we value diversity.  We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status or disability.  We actively seek a diverse applicant pool, with a variety of life experience.  An understanding of Te Ao Maori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi is particularly valuable.
